What I found when I went digging into the reels blowing up on small accounts, and exactly what I'm doing on my own account right now.
For you if you've got zero to a few thousand followers, your reels get 100 to 300 views, and you have a real skill you want the right people to find.
Hey, I'm Tony.
Three years ago I got laid off for the third time. I was working nights as a janitor, and my wife, our three kids, two cats and I were all sleeping in my parents' spare bedroom. Fast forward three years: I've built two audiences past 100K, I'm over 100K followers on TikTok, and I've sold over 1,000 courses.
Then I came over to Instagram and got humbled. My reels were getting a few hundred views, same as a lot of you. So I did what I tell every one of my students to do. I studied. I went deep on the reels that were blowing up on small accounts, the ones that blew way past what that account normally gets, and figured out what they had in common.
What I can promise is a system you can repeat: test a handful of reels, figure out which ones land, and make more of those. It takes about 14 days to run once. Let's go.
If a stranger landed on your profile right now, could they tell what you do in three seconds? Be honest. If the answer is "ehh," start here.
This takes about 20 minutes, and you only do it once.
One specific person, one result, a number to back it up, and two ways to raise your hand. Nothing else.
Your proof can be your life. "Still in the classroom, 3 kids" tells the right person you get it.
Hand a friend your phone, show them your profile for three seconds, take it back, and ask what you do. If they can't answer, rewrite line 1 of your bio.
Coming up with a brand new reel idea every day is exhausting, and most of the time you're guessing.
So let's stop guessing. Find reels in your niche that blew past the size of the account that posted them, and model the format. People already showed you what they'll stop scrolling for. Use it.
Borrow the structure and bring everything else yourself. Your footage, your words, your real numbers. Instagram has said it shows reposted and watermarked content less. And if you copy someone else's results and claims, you're lying, and people can tell.
| Borrow this | Bring your own |
|---|---|
| The hook structure"If you're a ___ trying to ___" | The actual words |
| The length and pacing | The footage |
| Where the lesson livescaption or voiceover | Your results and claims |
| The type of call to actioncomment one word | Your freebie |
The reels breaking out right now come in two flavors. Do both.
5 to 10 seconds, no talking. Simple footage, one line of text you can read in a second, and the lesson sitting in the caption. About a third of the breakouts.
You, your phone, your car or your couch, explaining one thing in 20 to 60 seconds. Same hook and caption rules. Just talk to your phone.
In what I found, small accounts got their big reach from the short ones and their followers from the talking heads.
Write your hook all three ways, then post the one you'd stop scrolling for.
Make sure you switched to a Professional account. If it's still not there, your account may not have the feature yet, so post these as regular reels for now.
Keep it simple. Almost none of the breakout reels I studied were heavily edited. Spend your time on the hook. The fancy transitions can wait.
In the breakout reels I studied, the lesson almost always lived in the caption. So treat your caption like the main event.
"Your reels are stuck at 200 views because of this."

Instagram search reads your name field and your captions. So say what the reel is about, in plain words, in the first line of your caption and in the text on screen.
A reel with 50,000 views and zero new followers feels amazing for about an hour.
Here's how you get people to actually stick around.
If people keep dropping off at the same step, fix that step. Lots of views but nobody visiting your profile? Your caption isn't pulling them in. Lots of profile visits but no follows? Go back to Step 1.
Here's something it took me way too long to learn on TikTok: most of my growth came from remaking stuff that already worked.
So give every reel 72 hours, then open the insights.
One creator in my research turned a single hook into three breakout reels by posting it again with new footage and a reworded caption. Change the footage or the audio each time so Instagram doesn't flag it as a duplicate, and do it up to three times in a week.
Last thing. Most people post one reel, get 150 views, and decide they're bad at this. Please don't be most people. Post twenty, then look at the numbers.
Paste these into ChatGPT, Claude or Meta AI, and swap anything in [brackets] for your own details.
And tell it to be blunt. AI loves telling you your ideas are amazing, and you want the truth.
Take a screenshot of your Instagram profile, upload it, and paste:
I'm attaching a screenshot of my Instagram profile. Pretend you've never heard of me and just landed here from one of my reels. Be direct and don't compliment me. Tell me:
Here is the script for my reel: [paste your script or idea]. My audience is [who you help]. Write an Instagram caption that:
Below are my last 5 Instagram captions. Read them as a stranger who just found my account. For each one, score from 1 to 5 how clearly it tells you who I help and why you should follow. Then tell me the pattern across all 5 and rewrite the weakest one. [paste your 5 captions]
My job is [your job]. People regularly ask me for help with [3 things]. Something I figured out the hard way is [one thing]. Suggest 3 coaching offers only someone like me could run. For each, give me: who it's for, the result they get, a format (1:1, small group or short course), a realistic starting price range, and the first 3 reels I should post to attract that person. I'm starting with zero audience, so be realistic.
Check its work. AI doesn't know your audience like you do. If it tells you something you know is wrong, trust yourself and move on.
Every one of these names a person or a problem, because that's what the breakout reels had in common.
Fill in the brackets and post the version you'd stop scrolling for.
Post twenty. Then look at the numbers. Then make more of what worked.
Growing is step one. If you've got a real skill, the kind where people already come to you for help (you're the nurse, the teacher, the trainer, the one who fixed their own credit), at some point you'll want to turn it into a coaching offer.
I built a 5-question quiz that tells you where to start: what to post, who it's for, and how to make it work. It takes about two minutes. Comment COACH on any of my posts, or start here:
